Costco Delivery Gets More Options. Check the Cart Before You Head to the Beach.
A warehouse run can swallow the part of Saturday you meant to spend somewhere better. If your weekend plan involves the coast, friends or simply getting out of the house, having the groceries arrive first has an obvious appeal. Costco members now have another way to make that happen.
In its September 17 announcement, DoorDash said Costco had launched on its U.S. marketplace nationwide, offering same-day delivery from Costco warehouses. That follows Uber’s September 16 announcement expanding its Costco delivery partnership from 17 states to 47.
Our take: more ways to get the shopping done are welcome. The useful question is what the completed order costs—and whether the time it saves is worth that amount to you.
What Actually Changed This Week
DoorDash says Costco members can shop more than 4,000 products, including groceries, household essentials and electronics. Its instructions ask shoppers to choose their warehouse and link an active Costco membership. This is a new national ordering option for members, rather than a reason to assume every item on a warehouse shelf will appear in your cart.
Uber describes nearly 600 participating Costco locations and a choice of on-demand or scheduled delivery. Its checkout instructions also include adding your Costco membership account. Check your own address and available delivery times before planning around either service.
Start With the Same Basket
A fair comparison starts with a shopping list. Put the same products, sizes and quantities into each basket you are considering. If one option substitutes a smaller pack or a different brand, pause before treating its lower total as a better deal.
Compare the final amount you would pay, including the charges shown at checkout and any tip you choose. A delivery headline tells you something about convenience; your actual basket tells you what that convenience costs today.
You do not need to turn grocery shopping into a research project. Pick the handful of things you really need, compare once, and make a decision. The goal is to save time without buying on autopilot.
Read the Conditions Behind the Offer
Uber’s announcement includes promotional benefits and says Uber One members can receive no Uber fees on eligible grocery and retail orders above $60. Its footnote limits that offer to select stores, says taxes and other governmental fees may still apply, and directs shoppers to the app for terms.
That makes eligibility part of the comparison. Check the offer attached to your account and order instead of assuming a promotional headline covers your situation. If a subscription is involved, consider its price and how often you would actually use it.
Adding items you never intended to buy just to reach a threshold can defeat the point. If the extra groceries have a real place in next week’s meals, fine. If they are only there to unlock an offer, look at the total again.
Give the Delivery a Job
For a beach weekend, the practical move is to organize the basics before you leave: the household shop, supplies for a gathering, or ingredients for dinner when you get back. Choose a delivery window that fits someone being there to receive the order.
Be specific about quantities and acceptable replacements wherever the ordering process allows. If one ingredient is essential to your plans, have an alternative in mind. A little preparation is more useful than building the afternoon around a perfectly timed arrival.
Bulk Only Works When You Use It
The big pack is easy to justify when you are feeding friends. It deserves another thought when you are shopping for one and already have a crowded kitchen.
Before confirming, picture where everything will go and when you will use it. Sharing a planned shop with your household can make sense; filling every available corner because ordering feels effortless is a different decision. Convenience should help you finish the list, not quietly expand it.
Buy Back Time With Your Eyes Open
This week’s announcements give Costco members more delivery choices. They do not establish which service will be cheapest for your address, account and particular order.
Compare a realistic basket, check the terms and choose the option that fits your day. If the final price feels worthwhile for the time saved, enjoy the extra room in your weekend. Getting the errands handled can be a perfectly good first step toward getting to the beach.
